Recommendations from An Experienced and Consultant Engineer regarding the Uttarakhand Tunnel Disaster
Workers trapped during the construction of the Silkara Dandalgaon tunnel in Uttarakhand have been successfully rescued. All agencies involved in the rescue are deserving of congratulations.
It is essential to rectify the mistake of not constructing an escape tunnel now, which is being drilled vertically, ensuring its completion. Both pipes must extend to the bottom.
The concrete lining of the tunnel dug from the Dandalgaon side should be completed at the primary level. Geologists connected to the Karnaprayag rail line should conduct geological mapping again, and their services should be utilized until the construction is complete.
Lining should also be done in the initially available section of 60 meters from the Silkara side before removing debris from the damaged section.
Create a concrete escape drain, 1.5 × 1.5 meters in length, beneath the tunnel surface, using it for the water supply from the tunnel. Both Badkot and Brahmkhal towns will have access to clean water, and irrigation will be possible.
In the future, this concrete drain escape tunnel can also be used in case of tunnel collapse. For tunnels longer than one kilometer, constructing a Box Culvert in the middle of the tunnel is a feasible solution.
